Christos G. Papakonstantinou is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, specializing in the Experimental Strength of Structural Materials, and Director of the Laboratory of Concrete Technology and Reinforced Concrete Structures. His work combines university teaching, research, and the application of engineering solutions to improve the safety, durability, and sustainability of structures.
He holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He completed his postgraduate studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of South Carolina and earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University in the United States.
His research focuses on the repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete structures using composite materials, as well as the technology and experimental investigation of structural material behavior. He places particular emphasis on the development of sustainable mortars, the use of recycled materials, and the application of durable composites and geopolymers for structural strengthening.
His international academic experience includes appointments as Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (2003–2009) and as a faculty member at the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (2012–2015). He is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
He has also taught as a visiting professor at universities internationally, including the University of Canterbury, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, the University of Botswana, the University of Granada, the University of Florence, Vilnius Technical University, the University of Catania, and the Technical University of Darmstadt.
He has published more than 100 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings and has coordinated research projects funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the European Union, and public and private organizations in Greece. He has also served as a consultant on the structural design of new buildings and bridges, as well as the repair and strengthening of existing structures, both in Greece and internationally.
As part of his commitment to community engagement, he supports ELQ INITIATIVE’s The Reaching Out Project, contributing his engineering expertise to the development of a safe and sustainable school environment in Thnal Dach, Cambodia. This involvement connects his roles as an engineer and educator with efforts to expand children’s access to education.
